Sinopsis, dari Goodreads:

It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

What strikes them first is their attraction of each other, not friendship. But for some reason (that only they know), they decided to be just friend. A good friend for each other.

Kematian, maksudku. Membaca novel ini rasanya seperti bertumbuh bersama mereka.

The Romance Between Emma dan Dexter

Ya, pada cerita 20 tahun kehidupan mereka ini -nanti kalau kamu membacanya, pada akhirnya they belong to each other But really, they must through lots of thing, lots of emotion. They meant for each other in form of friendship (supporting each other) and in form of love-relationship. The beautiful thing is that Emma made Dexter decent, and Dexter made Emma out from her shell.

Character Development

Dexter. Terlahir di keluarga yang bahagia dan kecukupan. Dexter bisa dikatakan easy-going, well sociated people, know exactly how to enjoy his life (though not-well determined), and famous to be a womanizer. Well, he’s a good-looking guy –oohh, Handsome i mean–. Dan tak luput dari fitrah kehidupan, he fell too, he had his miserable life too. Tapi lebih dari itu semua, like i said Dex and Em was meant for each other, akan ada Emma  yang dengan caranya menyempurnakan Dexter.

Emma. She hides her beauty, that was what Dexter thought after they first encounter in July 15th, 1988. Tak seperti Dexter, Emma menjalani ‘masa suram’-nya terlebih dahulu.

Other things

Dexter’s parents.

Alison Mayhew, Dexter’s mom, was beautiful; cheerful; life-ful. A nice-character mother to have. Stephen Mayhew, Dexter’s father, fifteen years older than Alison. He was always look content, but warm in heart -and so in love with Allison. Dexter had all the luck, they’re really good parents. Sad to say, Alison left Stephen -She died, and that was one heart-breaking moment in Dexter’ life. His mom once said:

‘I think . . .’ She lifts her head from his shoulder. ‘I think that you have it in you to be a fine young man. Exceptional even. I have always thought that. Mothers are supposed to, aren’t they? But I don’t think you’re there yet. Not yet. I think you’ve got some way to go. That’s all.

and that was what Dexter’s life about, he reached his decent-self cost years and finally he is a decent person. And Alison, just like moms generally, always believe that her son will be a fine man. She’s a lovely mom, for real.

Book vs movie adaptation

The movie was done nicely. Its a good romance movie, in my honest opinion. The casts, setting and Jim Sturgess was perfect. Eh, did i just say Jim Sturgess is perfect?😛 Pardon me, because this movie make me fall for Jim Sturgess🙂

The movie give a good romance-vibe that built between Dexter and Emma. I swoon and i cried. I smiled and i felt heartbroken. Ah, i love the movie i gave it 9/10. Well, you better watch it yourself.

But for some reason, the book feel better than the movie. What about it? what about it that the book was better than movie? Isn’t that i rated 4/5 for the book and 9/10 for the movie?

Its common reasons, actually. The book succesfully give me more and deep feeling from the characters. The book let me know what’s in Dexter and Emma’s heart and mind about each other. Yes it was definitely what books can give you, wider than the movie. The other reason that i feel that the book was way better than the movie was the long-written-and-classic letters. Though the movie ever mentioned the long-written letters but the book give the vibe of it better. I missed it in the movie, still i think it would be a nice little touch-up though.

Favorite scene(s)

Dex & Emma’s trip to local beach at Greece. Their romance was almost happened, but its not. My heart thumped while i read (and watch) this part.

Last comments

I am a hopeless romantic. I swoon at both the book and the movie adaptation, easily. I heart this David Nicholls’s piece and… i may look for another of his work.

Hope you enjoy this review.

Happy reading~
