First thing first, i need to read this book twice because the gap time since i last read it is pretty much long so i need to refresh my memory. And this second time i read it, i still can feel it. I feel broken heart at  the end of this book. Then, i need to tell you –and it might be an indication of spoiler, so if you hate spoiler, you need to stop read this review.

This novel tells us another first love story. And as i –and some of you- know, the common end of first love story was never really a happy ending. I’ve told you. Because its a first love, you know, if first love work then there’ll be many of us married at young age.

~

Yep, the romance has just begun. Mereka mulai menyadari keberadaan satu sama lain, dan ketertarikan mulai tumbuh diantara mereka.

“Holding Eleanor’s hand was like holding a butterfly. Or a heartbeat. Like holding something complete, and completely alive”

“..When he touched Eleanor’s hand, he recognized her. He knew.”

What are the chances you’d ever meet someone like that? he wondered. Someone you could love forever, someone who would forever love you back? And what did you do when that person was born half a world away?

The math seemed impossible. How did his parents get so lucky?

Park wondered if his dad saw his mom in the street or from the road or working in a restaurant. He wondered how they both knew …

Yep. Park was a good boyfriend to-be.

‘Nothing before you counts,’ he said. ‘And I can’t even imagine an after.’
She shook her head. ‘Don’t.’
‘What?’
‘Don’t talk about after.’
‘I just meant that … I want to be the last person who ever kisses you, too … That sounds bad, like a death threat or something. What I’m trying to say is, you’re it. This is it for me.’
‘Don’t.’
‘Eleanor …’
‘I don’t want to think about an after.’
‘That’s what I’m saying, maybe there won’t be one.’
‘Of course there will. I mean … God, of course there will. It’s not like we’re going to get married, Park.’
‘Not now.’
‘Stop.’

‘I’m not proposing,’ he said. ‘I’m just saying … I love you. And I can’t imagine stopping …’
She shook her head. ‘But you’re twelve.’
‘I’m sixteen …’ he said. ‘Bono was fifteen when he met his wife, and Robert Smith was fourteen …’
‘Romeo, sweet Romeo …’
‘It’s not like that, Eleanor, and you know it.’ Park’s arms were tight around her. All the playfulness in his voice was gone. ‘There’s no reason to think we’re going to stop loving each other,’ he said. ‘And there’s every reason to think that we won’t.’

I really love this novel that i’ve read it twice. I love this novel that i listened all the playlist songs the writer have while writing it. I love the 80s setting. I love Eleanor and Park discuss about many good songs and talk about Xmen. I love that the writer, Rainbow, choose that the love here was kind of love that build slowly. I love Rainbow writings, ups i said it again. I love the sweet dialog that sometimes happened between Eleanor and Park. And most of it, i love that Rainbow make the main characters who’s not a physically beautiful people. Yes, here, the misfits here has their way become one, has their way to fall in love.

I don’t know how to say goodbye to you,’ she said.

He smoothed her hair off her face. He’d never seen her so fair. ‘Then don’t.’

But I have to go …

So go,’ he said, with his hands on her cheeks. ‘But don’t say goodbye. It’s not goodbye.’

She rolled her eyes and shook her head. ‘That’s so lame.’

Seriously? You can’t cut me five minutes of slack?’

That’s what people say – “It’s not goodbye” – when they’re too afraid to face what they’re really feeling. I’m not going to see you tomorrow, Park – I don’t know when I’ll see you again. That deserves more than “It’s not goodbye.”

I’m not afraid to face what I’m feeling,’ he said.

‘Not you,’ she said, her voice breaking. ‘Me.’

Eleanor hates Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare but sometimes Park act as mellow as Shakespeare.

‘Do you really believe that?’ she asked.

‘What?’

‘That … we’ll have other chances? That we have any chance at all?’

‘Yes.’

‘No matter what happens,’ she said forcefully, ‘I’m not coming home.’

‘I know.’

She was quiet.

‘No matter what happens,’ Park said, ‘I love you.’

She put her arms around his waist, and he hugged her shoulders.

‘I just can’t believe that life would give us to each other,’ he said, ‘and then take it back.’

‘I can,’ she said. ‘Life’s a bastard.’

He held her tighter, and pushed his face into her neck.

‘But it’s up to us …’ he said softly. ‘It’s up to us not to lose this.’

I love the way Park cherish Eleanor. I love the romantic Park. But for Eleanor, maybe, it was too beautiful to become true. She had no confidence that she decided that they should stop when Park give her a ride to uncle Geoff’s house in Minesotta. Poor Park. But once again, maybe thats how first love work: end up just as a memory, as first memory of love. The ending like this, was a heart-breaker for some reader but for me, the ending like this was the best it could be. And so, its make the plan of sequel of Eleanor & Park became more reasonable, tough i think Eleanor & Park dont need the continuation of their story. Because its up to the readers mind, at least i thought so.

Till now, i still cant move on. I’m still listening into Eleanor & Park playlist. Well, the songs are cool anyway. Wanna try to listen it too? Here the list. The songs are nice, most of them. Just try to listen it. Last,  obviously, its one of my favourites ever and i gladly recommend it to you to read it. Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as i do.

Happy reading^^

The New York Times review of Eleanor & Park byJohn Green.
